Montres ZENITH ‘PRIMA’ Switzerland. No 2349718
Good Swiss watch retailed by A & C A Robertson, Edgware Rd, London.
£1,295.00
9ct pink gold Dennison crystal (flat glass) case hallmarked Birmingham 1922. Zenith’s split three-quarter plate gilded movement jewelled to the centre, their 17-jewel PRIMA grade, also marked ADJUSTED. Straight-line detached lever escapement with polished steel club-tooth escape. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil and fine adjustment. Enamel dial in perfect condition, although the printed ZENITH signature with some loss, original blued steel hands. 49.5 mm diameter. Together with its retailer’s gilt tooled and velvet and silk lined box.
Zenith Watch Company, then with a London office at 119 High Holborn, were the leading Swiss manufacturer in obtaining the highest ratings for their watches at the Kew (NPL) Watch Trials. Zenith’s ‘Standard’ model was finished with 15 jewels and was not full adjusted, as was this PRIMA model – see Zenith’s advert placed in the November 1924 Horological Journal showing just how ‘especially good’ their PRIMA grade performed.
A fine and relatively uncommon example of this firm’s best work in lovely condition, noting one or two minor bruises to the case and the rear cover with monogram. Not cleaned by me but working well, and priced accordingly, but can of course be serviced if required – my likely charge being around £200
NB: I have pictured this watch with an entirely suitable (weight and colour) 9ct pink gold fancy link chain with a carnelian and bloodstone faced fob weighing just under 40 grams in total. It is priced at £1750 but if purchased with the watch will be discounted to £1500
