JW – J WYCHERLY, Prescot

Rare and unusual rough movement, circa 1880.

Item 51104 Categories: Watch Movements, Watches

£125.00

14-size hollow-back (no brass-edge) fullplate key wound movement, the frame with a second fixed barrel mounted on the pillar-plate and showing through the dial, the frame stamped JW (Wycherly). Double sunk enamel dial in perfect condition. No train or escapement parts fitted at this stage and the dial feet not drilled for pins.  43 mm diameter.

John Wycherly (1817-91), one of the most important Liverpool makers of rough movements and supplier to most of the best English finishers of his day. He designed his own tooling and standardised English movement sizes, and is holder of Patent No 880, March 1867, for manufacturing “parts of a watch framework to gauge, so that they may be interchangeable”

NB: Watch movements could be supplied to retailers in any state they required, from just the frame to a complete watch. This is a most unusual caliper but I seem to remember that a watch was marketed with a spare mainspring, the top of the exposed dummy barrel being engraved as such.

In good clean condition.
