Rough movement – Lancashire work
Rare verge frame, circa 1810.
£125.00
Fullplate movement complete with cock and both potences but no train, presumably in the state it left the frame maker, the pillar-plate stamped with its Lancashire size 18 8 and with what I take to be its batch number 2 in ink. 44.5 mm diameter.
English watch manufacturing was split into at least forty separate specialist trades at this time, around 50% who were involved in the manufacture of rough movements, which the Swiss/French call an ebauche. It is from rare items like this, rather than the complete, frosted and gilded watches, that one can fully appreciate how wonderfully good and crisp was the work of these, mostly Lancashire, specialists.
In good hand scraped but dull and dusty condition.
