Robt ROSKELL, Liverpool. No 7684
Good rack-lever by this famous Liverpool firm.
£995.00
Silver pair case hallmarked Chester 1814, casemaker EM (probably Edward Maddock, Liverpool), the outer with contemporary watchpaper. Capped fullplate movement with adjustable slide for the lever arbor and 3-wheel train, the typically heavily engraved cock signed PATENT. Rack-lever (dead-beat) escapement, the large escape wheel with 30 teeth. Steel balance, original 6-turn blued-steel spiral balance-spring. Original enamel dial with typical high gloss finish and decorative ‘Liverpool’ 1/4 hour marks, gold hands. 56 mm diameter.
Robert Roskell, along with Peter Litherland, Liverpool’s most famous manufacturer of top quality rack-lever watches. NB. Since first invented in 1791, such watches were offered with both 3 and 4-wheel trains, the former usually without seconds indication as the large escape wheel meant a seconds hand revolving four times a minute.
Dial with some minor blemishes (original), minute hand possibly replaced and the glass showing some light scratches – it may well be the original which is why I have not changed it. Otherwise in fine original condition, a very good example of its kind. Serviced and guaranteed.
