L S STOWE, South Gardner, Mass. No 40471
American retailed Lancashire movement, circa 1850, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£45.00
Fullplate fusee movement with ‘Liverpool windows’ to the fusee, but not at the centre which is hidden by the cock and cannot be seen. Single-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial signed for the retailer. 45 mm diameter.
This is good example of the eye-catching Liverpool watches that the better retailers were promoting in America at this time. NB: It was Lancashire watches like these with which the fledging American Waltham Watch Company had to compete, a difficult job that took many years before becoming successful.
Lacking cap and hands, the dial with a chip and the usual hair cracks. Otherwise complete but all rather dusty and the fusee seized – sold as not working.
