Anonymous, No 5904 – Coventry work
Lever movement with rare Webb’s Patent dial, circa 1855.
£95.00
Capped fullplate fusee movement, numbered but bearing no retailers name, the cap stamped TF (cameo). Single-roller detached lever escapement. Gold balance, spiral balance-spring. Two-piece Webb’s Patent dial with floral acid-etched design at the centre of both the main and seconds bit. 43.5 mm diameter, 10 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
John Webb, Coventry. Patent No 1051, December 1852 – see my PROFILE No 3 on Enamel Watch Dials for another example – these two being the only examples I can remember seeing.
Lacking hands and the top of the cap rather distorted. Otherwise it will tick if wound, despite being rather dusty. The dial has survived in almost perfect condition, just showing a few slight scratches and the finest of hairline cracks at the edge between I and II. Rare.
