Jos’h PENLINGTON, Liverpool. No 14112
Good free-sprung lever movement, circa 1890.
£75.00
Keyless going-barrel half-plate plate movement jewelled to the centre, with cap jewels on balance (diamond), lever and escape. Double-roller detached lever escapement, the lever of ‘tuning fork’ pattern, as often associated with best English work. Compensation balance, free sprung balance-spring. Signed enamel dial, original blued-steel hand. 46.5 mm diameter, 9 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Joseph Penlington, St George’s Crescent North, one of the Liverpool’s premier watch and chronometer makers of the period.
NB: While it is often stated that English watchmakers would not abandon the fusee, leading to the trades obvious late 19th century decline, it is not really true. Many London, Coventry and Liverpool manufactures were offering top quality going-barrel movements by 1875, if not long before – Nicole and Capt, for example, from around 1840.
Dial with a few faint hair cracks around the seconds bit, as usual, otherwise in good complete condition. Not cleaned by me and tries to tick when wound, but it has a bent top pivot which I shall leave to the new owner to try and straighten.
