John WOOD, Liverpool. No 3245
Rare Lancashire cylinder movement, circa 1820, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£75.00
Fullplate going-fusee movement with cap jewels on balance and escape, the cap stamped H. Cylinder (frictional rest) escapement with polished steel escape. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. One-piece enamel dial, 47 mm diameter, 14.5 mm deep. not including centre arbor.
Presumably the John Wood who Loomes records as working in Liverpool between 1798 and 1828.
NB: With first the ‘Ormskirk’ and later Peter Litherland’s rack lever watches, both with frictional-rest ‘dead beat’ escapements, Lancashire watchmakers only very rarely bothered to fit the earlier Graham’s cylinder, most London makers’ choice.
Cracks in dial and lacking hands, otherwise complete. Not cleaned by me and tries to tick when would, but sold as needing at least a service and fresh oil to work properly.
