Ja’s TREGENT, London. No 2615
Stylish cylinder watch by this interesting maker.
£2,495.00
22ct gold pair cases hallmarked 1781, casemaker WQ (William Quintin). Fullplate fusee movement with beautifully pierced and engraved cock and slide plate. Cylinder (dead beat) escapement with 13 tooth brass escape, the steel cylinder retaining its original Graham-type banking. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial with lovely original gold hands. 48 mm diameter.
James Tregent, working from Leicester Fields, London, later becoming ’Watchmaker to the Prince of Wales,’ a retailer of stylish and often innovative clocks and watches. Along with many other good London watchmakers, such as John Arnold, he was made free of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1781, the date of this watch. NB: This example has a most fashionable for the period tall pendant and a rare design of outer case with a hidden joint, making it one of the earliest I have handled.
A restored dial (not by me) and lacking its rim cap, otherwise in good, original condition, the lovely case with no previous monogram or dedication. Not cleaned by me but winding and ticking well.
