E MASSEY, 89 Strand, London. No 4116
Rare Massey family movement, circa 1835, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£75.00
12-size hollow-back fullplate fusee movement. Single-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, the spiral balance-spring with gallows stud. 40 mm diameter.
This is presumably the work of Edmund Massey who was in partnership with F J Massey at 89 Strand between 1839 and 1857. It is open to question whether this movement pre-or post-dates the partnership, although Alan Treherne in his 1977 Massey catalogue favours the latter. I think a date of circa 1860 is too late for this movement.
Lacking dial, hands and motion work and rather dirty. Nothing appears broken but unwilling to tick. Sold as not working.
