KULLBERG, No 6200, for EDWARD & Sons, 92 Buchanan St, Glasgow
Fine keyless reverse fusee hunter with up/down indication, with provenance.
£4,245.00
Heavy gold hunter case hallmarked London 1899, casemaker FT (Fred Thoms). Typical Kullberg half-plate movement jewelled to the 3rd with cap jewels on balance (diamond) lever and escape, the barrel and fusee transposed from normal (reverse fusee), and with Kullberg’s ‘knock out’ keyless work allowing the button to turn freely when in the pocket. Double-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, spiral balance-spring with overcoil. Lovely signed enamel dial with state-of-wind indication at 3, original blued-steel hands. 51 mm diameter and weighing just under 140 grams gross.
George Edward & Sons, 92 Buchanan Street, Glasgow, holder of warrants to His Majesty the King and to the Prince of Wales and to the Admiralty, retailers of the best London work, as is this watch. NB: This Joseph Preston movement caliper is strongly associated with the London firm of Victor Kullberg and can be found bearing a variety of retailers names.
Victor Kullberg, one of London’s most famous watch and chronometer manufacturers, who also supplied watches for others to retail. This movement, along with a full list of all those involved in its manufacture, can probably be found in the Kullberg record books held as part of the Clockmakers’ Company Library at London’s Guildhall – not all records are present.
The case beautifully engraved with ‘HG’ monogram and the crest and motto ‘NIL PENNA SED USUS’ (not the pen but its use) of the Gilmour family, the dome with dedication to Harry Gilmour “from his Father and Mother on his 21st Birthday” in 1899. Some chain wear to the bow and the multi-drilled dial with the usual hair cracks at the centre. Otherwise few signs of use and obviously looked after well by its former owner/s. Serviced and guaranteed.
