Thos YATES, Preston, PATENTEE. No 987
Early, top quality Patent slow-beat lever movement, but sadly incomplete, circa 1850, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£25.00
Half-plate fusee movement with 7200 train, the 12-size frame stamped WB (possibly William Brown, Prescot). Half-seconds beating single-roller lever escapement. Heavy compensation balance with spiral balance-spring. Signed cream enamel dial. 43 mm diameter, 11 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Thomas William Yates, 12 Friargate, Preston, PATENT No 11443, November 1846. Altering the gearing of the escapement in order to give half-seconds beating watches. Most examples have plain balances, the better finished examples having specially manufactured heavy compensation balances, as here.
Dial with hair crack, lacking hands, top balance jewel setting, plus fourth wheel, escape and lever – so just a relic, but the lovely balance is rare enough to think about its restoration.
