MARTIN, BASKETT & MARTIN, Cheltenham. No 1036
Interesting Lancashire movement with Savage 2-pin escapement, circa 1840, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£75.00
Slim three-quarter plate fusee movement, the 16-size frame stamped A&G (Abbot & Garnett) as well as with a small ‘S’ cameo stamp, the latter not seen by me before. Savage 2-pin detached lever escapement. Gold balance, spiral balance-spring. Signed enamel dial, blued steel hands. 44 mm diameter, 8 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Martin, Baskett & Martin, Cheltenham, retailers, recorded as working circa 1840.
Abbott & Garnett, Farnworth, near Prescot, Lancashire, recorded as ‘watchmakers’ in Trade Directories of the 1834-1851 period, manufacturers of top quality rough movements, often of great individuality.
George Savage invented but did not Patent his improved detached lever escapement around 1814. Examples are uncommon and tended only to be fitted to better made, more expensive watches.
Dial with hair crack and lacking hour hand, otherwise complete and nothing broken. Not cleaned by me, and tries to tick when wound, but sold as needing at least a service and fresh oil to run properly.
