Just VULLIAMY, London. Code cuo
Beautifully cased Georgian watch by this famous firm, in lovely original condition, circa 1780-5.
£7,495.00
22ct gold single case, elaborately enamelled with oval memorial centred within a dark blue guilloche enamel background surrounded with lovely ‘old cut’ diamonds, the memorial of a classical urn under glass, mounted with diamonds on a human hair background, casemaker IM (probably James Maklin) but carrying no date letter. Fullplate fusee movement with typical beautiful piercing and engraving of the cock and slide plate. Cylinder escapement with polished steel escape. Best quality ‘Venetian’ enamel dial, the winding hole at 4 with gold collet matching the beautiful original gold ‘arrow head’ hands. 45.5 mm diameter
Justin Vulliamy and son Benjamin, Clockmakers to King George III and the Prince Regent, later George IV, suppliers of best quality clocks and watches to the English aristocracy, the new Houses of Parliament as well as many London clubs and institutions. Justin, formerly in partnership with Benjamin Gray, supplied some of the best and most beautifully decorated watches of the period, of which this is a fine example.
NB: This watch was first sold by Sothebys in 1975, coming from collection of Sir William Pennington-Ramsden. At that time the family provided the watches provenance as being Charles Ingram, 9th Viscount Irwin, who was a British Landowner, politician and courtier who succeeded to the Viscountcy and the Temple Newsam estate in 1763. Charles Ingram died in 1778 but his widow, Frances Shepheard, continued to live at Temple Newsam until her death in 1807. The watch may well have been supplied to commemorate her late husband, or their late father by one of the family’s five daughters, their eldest, Isabella Ingram, being at one time the mistress of the Prince of Wales, the future King George IV.
The watch in almost mint, unused condition, just one small knock on the back which has lost a small piece of the dark blue enamel, and some pieces of white missing on the front bezel. I have left this showing as I want any prospective buyer to know that the enamel on this watch has not been later extensively restored, as have so many that appear to be similar. The blue and white enamel has now been touched in by the previous owner. Serviced and guaranteed.
