Josh PENLINGTON, Liverpool. No 1782
Rare transitional centre-seconds movement, circa 1825, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£125.00
Large semi-fullplate fusee movement, winding and hand setting from the rear, with sprung cap. Single-roller detached lever escapement, the roller with passing-flat rather than the usual crescent. Gold balance, spiral balance-spring. Beautiful cream enamel dial in lovely condition. 50 mm diameter, 11.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Joseph Penlington, St George’s Crescent North, one of Liverpool’s premier watch and chronometer makers of the period.
NB: Three-quarter and half-plate movements, necessary for thinner watches, started to appear in English watches around 1825, along with a few rare and sometimes extraordinary variations. This large example is one of the best and most visually interesting designs.
Lacking hands and dial with some faint hair cracks at the edge near II, otherwise in good original condition. Not cleaned by me, but will tick happily if wound.
