James GIBSON ‘IMPROVED SKELETON TIMEKEEPER’ Lord St, Liverpool. No 17648
Unusual American marketed Lancashire movement, circa 1850, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£25.00
Small three-quarter plate fusee movement with unusually shaped top plate, as presumably refereed to on the dial. Single-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, spiral balance-spring. Numbered enamel dial also announcing the fact that it is QUICK BEAT, gold fleur-de-lys hand. 37 mm diameter, 6.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
James Gibson, one of many Liverpool retailers of watches sold in to the (pre-Waltham) American market that have yet to be recorded. As far as I can see both marketing claims on the dial are unsubstantiated, this being a good example of the marketing ploys which were sometimes adopted.
Dial cracked, damaged hands and chain unhooked. Otherwise looking undamaged and will just about tick if pressure is applied to the train. Sold as not working.
