EGGERT & Son, New York. No 276
Fine American finished box chronometer, circa 1850.
£3,750.00
Brass-bound mahogany box with beautifully figured veneers top and front, with named plaque intact, the key of non-ratcheting design, and which I believe is original. Nicely made sprung gimbaling on all actions, including the movement which, like Parkinson & Frodsham chronometers is positioned on three posts, but which also support sprung numbered segmental washers bearing on the underside of the dial – it does not have P&F’s design of an internal spring cap. Signed fullplate fusee movement retaining much of its original spotting, the English frame stamped GH. Spring-detent escapement in fine condition retaining its original footed detent with gold passing-spring. 11-turn blued-steel helical balance-spring acting with compensation balance having round weights and additional mean-time screws. Silvered dial with engraved five minute numerals, state-of-wind indication and offset seconds, original gold hands. Box approx 19 cm square.
Dominic Eggert & Son ‘Chronometer Manufacturers’ 239 Pearl St, New York, later moving to Wall Street.
The box lightly polished and generally in lovely original condition, a fine English supplied movement that gives every indication of being finished in New York. Serviced and guaranteed.
NB: Chronometers need specialist handling and I always prefer to hand deliver wherever possible. If not, it will be properly packed such that no damage will occur in transit.
