£3,295.00
Large gold ‘dog collar’ case with stylishly flat button and snap-on bezel and rear cover, hallmarked London 1903, sponsor’s mark RN (Robert North). NN’s later form of three-quarter-plate keyless going-barrel movement, jewelled to the 3rd with cap jewels on balance, lever and escape, and hard brass setting at the centre. Single-roller detached lever escapement, the lever of ‘tuning fork’ pattern, as often associated with the best work of the period. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil. Signed enamel dial in perfect condition, with original blued-steel hands – a most beautiful combination often attributed to Breguet, but first used by J-A Lepine. 54 mm diameter and weighing 120 grams gross. Together with original retailers box signed for M F DENT ‘Chronometer Maker to the Queen…’
The firm of M F Dent, Charing Cross, London, one of the leading watch, chronometer and clock makers of the period – see also the book on Edward John Dent and the various Dent firms by Vaudrey Mercer.
Nicole Nielsen & Co, the leading manufactures of top class English watches during the second half of the 19th century, suppliers to Messrs Dent, Frodsham, S Smith & Son, and many other retailers. See also my reprint of their circa 1900 High-Class English Watches catalogue, copies of which are available on my website. This design is not shown in the catalogue, but is similar to Type 16 (1st quality, 20-size, but cased as a hunter), priced at £32 – Dent will have charged more, especially for what was presumably a design supplied exclusively to them.
The rear cover engine-turned with ‘BS’ monogram and bow showing slight signs of wear, otherwise the watch in lovely original condition, the bow and covers still tight. The box also in good condition but showing a few marks on the outside. Serviced and guaranteed.
NB: I have also shown the watch with a suitable ‘pocket to pocket’ gold chain with sliding T-bar. 18ct carat and weighing just under 40 grams. This is priced at £2500 if bought with the watch.
