A COCKBURN, Haddington. No 12002
Good London finished single-roller movement with Massey-type banking block, circa 1825, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£25.00
Fullplate fusee movement with cap jewels on balance (diamond) and escape, the cap stamped LxR, as often associated with the best London work of the period. Single-roller detached lever escapement, the lever tail banking between two brass pins, part of a separate block held between the plates. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. One-pice cream enamel dial. 47 mm diameter, 15.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Adam Cockburn, Haddington, Scotland, watchmaker, recorded as emigrating to Canada in 1843.
NB: The single-roller variant of the detached lever escapement, along with the 2-pin, the Savage 2-pin and the dovetail forms, was almost certainly devised to get round the 1812 Patent taken of by Edward Massey for his version of Mudge’s original escapement. Just why it became the standard English form of the escapement is open to discussion, but ease of manufacture and setting up will no doubt have played a large part.
Dial with chips, lacking hands, index and part of cap bolt. Otherwise complete and although not cleaned by me will tick happily when wound.
