Swiss – ROTHERAM(sic), Geneva. No 4052
Interesting two train independent-seconds movement, circa 1850, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£75.00
Highly jewelled gilt barred two-train movement bearing a false name and possibly a real place of manufacture, the hollow-back frame stamped with the number 4052. Detached lever escapement, polished steel club-tooth escape. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. 41 mm diameter.
No such firm as ‘Rotheram’ exists, and certainly not in Switzerland, so I can only presume this movement, engraved for the English speaking market, was intended to bear the name of Rotherham – and done so in order to deceive potential customers. As flattering as that may appear to the real Coventry manufacturer, it just shows to what depth some (all?) Swiss firms and their agents would stoop in their attempt to attract sales.
No dial, hands, etc, and a broken balance staff pivot. The abuse of the name apart, an uncommon and well made and jewelled two-train movement. Not working.
