Fine Swiss keyless pivoted-detent chronometer with provenance, circa 1875.

Heavy gold engine-turned hunter case with unusual hand-set slide at 5, casemaker DG, the inside of the front cover engraved “Presented to their Chaplain the Revd R Byron by his congregation in recognition of his able ministration during 25 Years and as a testimony of their affection and esteem. Antwerp 28 February 1876.” Top quality nickel barred movement with gold train wheels, finished with ‘Geneva stripes’ and jewelled to the centre with partial gold settings and caps, with cap jewels on balance, detent and escape, the dial side of the pillar-plate stamped with the Breting name and number. Pivoted-detent (bascule) escapement acting with a polished gold escape wheel. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil. Top quality two-piece Swiss enamel dial in perfect condition, the original gold hands set with rose cut diamonds, the seconds hand of a novel design. 53 mm diameter and weighing just over 140 grams gross. Ulyse Breting (1812-1891), a fine but now little known Swiss watchmaking firm, specialising in pocket chronometers with ‘bascule’ escapements, one coming 4th in 1875 at the Neuchatel Observatory Trials, this example being of the same date.
Reverend Robert Byron (1851-1883) Chaplain of the English Anglican Church in Holland. This was situated in the ‘Tanners Chapel’ in Antwerp, moving to a new purpose built Church (St Boniface’s) in 1910.
A very well made and finished chronometer, movement and case. Not mint, but in fine, little used condition. First sold be me over twenty years ago, now freshly serviced and re-offered for sale.
