Forged steel with PS STUBS stamp, the frame also stamped 13, which is thought to identify the actual maker.
As shown in the Peter Stubs 1851 Tool Catalogue (see Crom page 198), item 91. Head 2 1/4 inches (6 cm) in length, handle 8 inches (20 cm). NB: The design of Stubs hammer heads changed very little during the 19th century and were mostly sold without a handle, this being made to suit by the owner, as here.
Peter Stubs (1756-1806), the greatest name in English tool suppliers, their tools being recognised as being of the very best quality and were purchased worldwide. See the book by E Surrey Dane, Peter Stubs and the Lancashire Hand Tool Industry.
