SMITHS De Luxe Watches

On top of the world! Everest Conquered…

Item 100198 Categories: Wristwatches, Books, etc, Prints, etc

£25.00

Fine black and duo-tone full page advert commemorating the ascent of Everest on 29th May 1953. From the Illustrated London News, 27 June 1953. Page size 36 x 25 cm (14.5 x 10 ins).

I believe this is the first large sized complete page advert placed by Smiths after the success of Tenzing and Hillary. Three De Luxe watches are shown: models A.453, A.408 and A.409, the latter 15-jewel example in a chromed case with luminous dial and hands, stated to be the type worn by Hillary. They cost £10 at the time.

NB: The expedition was also supplied with Smiths oxygen gauges, altimeters and travel alarm clocks.

In fine condition, just a small crease at the top right hand corner and ideal for framing.
