Rough movement, No 12563 – English work
Rare capped movement, circa 1850.
£75.00
18-size fullplate hollow-back movement with barrel-bar numbered 12563, the cap fitted with its curved steel bolt on to its two posts, numbered 563 and stamped HK (the H unclear). No train, fusee or escapement. 47.5 mm diameter.
Rough movements with caps are rare survivors and clearly show how good cap makers were, and that they did indeed make them from one piece – only the fusee/winding square collet was added later. At this, pre-gilded stage it is also clear just how well they were fitted if the cock table was exposed, as here. There is no room even for a hair between the two and thus some relieving will have to have been done prior to gilding.
Rather dirty from having survived in workshop conditions for most of its life, but still a fine record of just how good was the work of this part of the English, mostly Lancashire and Coventry, trade.
