Robt ROSKELL, Liverpool. No 36993

Fine transitional movement with Massey-2 escapement, circa 1825.

Item 102579 Categories: Watch Movements, Watches

£165.00

Large and slim capped fullplate fusee movement, the foot of the cock set on a sub-plate attached to the upper three-quarter shaped plate, the balance set into the resultant space, the typically chased cock table showing through the cap. Massey type-2 detached lever escapement with short early straight-sided lever. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring.  Lovely one-piece cream enamel dial, mis-matched blued-steel hands 47 mm diameter, 11 mm deep, not including centre arbor.

Robert Roskell, at this time in Woolton, famous Liverpool watch, clock and chronometer maker, one of the most influential of Lancashire watch manufacturers.

Edward Massey, the most important detached lever escapement manufacturer of the first half of the 19th century. Good examples, such as this, of the 2nd type roller are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Dial with the faintest of hairline blemishes, but showing no cracks, and lacking the seconds hand. Otherwise complete and nothing appears broken. The balance is free and it wants to tick, and would almost certainly do so properly if cleaned and freshly oiled, but sold as not working.

NB. All illustrations and photographs of watches, ephemera, etc, shown on my website are part of an extensive library of horological images. Please contact me for a license to use any of them. Signed copies of my escapement drawings, on top quality paper suitable for framing, also available – prices from £50.
