R STAMFORD. London. No 35732
Unusual silver hunter with built in compass.
£495.00
Silver hunter case with plain polished covers and fixed dome hallmarked London 1866, casemaker IH (John Hammon, Clerkenwell). Capped fullplate key-wound fusee movement of unusual layout. Single-roller detached lever escapement. Gold balance, spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial with inset compass at 12, gold hands. 50 mm diameter.
Apart from being recorded by Loomes, I can find out nothing either about the watchmaker / retailer, nor have I found another example of this unusual watch, but I suspect that the design will have been registered or at least recorded at some point.
The case in good condition, some hair cracks in the dial and the movement showing some previous hard wear, but fully serviced and working well. The compass working but I don’t think reliably, perhaps being affected by the steel in the watch.
