PARKINSON & FRODSHAM, Change Alley, London. No 2441
Good duplex movement with Wright/Earnshaw Patent balance, circa 1835.
£245.00
Slim fullplate fusee movement with rim cap. Duplex escapement, retaining its ruby roller. Compensation balance of a very rare form, spiral balance-spring. Signed enamel dial, blued-steel hands. 43.5 mm diameter, 10 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
William Parkinson and William James Frodsham, 4 Change Alley, London, a famous firm of chronometer and watch makers – see the book on the various Frodsham firms by Vaudrey Mercer, a copy of which is usually available on my website.
This is only the second time I have seen this form of balance, with what appears to be an attempt to check its movement, by part of the steel rim being enlarged. This is an example of the two forms of bimetallic balance covered in the Patent taken out by Thomas Wright in 1783, and which includes Earnshaw’s spring-detent escapement.
The dial with hair cracks and lacking seconds hand. Balance swinging freely, but no power getting to the escape. Not working and sold as needing at least cleaning and fresh oil to work properly.
