£45.00

Three-quarter plate pillarless keyless (hunter set) going-barrel movement jewelled to the 3rd with hard brass setting at the centre, with cap jewels on balance, lever and escape, the frame stamped with Nicole’s new series number 2066 and the top plate engraved with the Dent’s triangle trademark. Single-roller detached lever escapement with banking via a forked tail lever and a single pin set on an adjustable screw head. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil. Perfect snap-on signed enamel dial, also with the triangle trademark. 42.5 mm diameter, 8.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.

The firm of E J Dent ‘Watchmaker to the Queen,’ then at 61 Strand & 4 Royal Exchange, London, one of the most important English watch, clock and chronometer makers/retailers of the second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries – see the book on Edward John Dent and the various Dent firms by Vaudrey Mercer.

Nicole Nielsen, formerly Nicole & Capt, were the foremost London watchmakers of the second half of the 19th century, supplying many of the finest watches to retailers such as Frodsham, Dent, Smith & Son, and Roskell. See my reprint of Nicole Nielsen’s High Class English Watches trade catalogue and my site Glossary for more information about this most important and still vastly underrated London firm. NB: The firm fitted a great deal of different lever escapements over the years, this movement having their unique banking of the period. This movement also features their snap-on dial which, at this period, have no locating pin, so care must be taken to line up the extended seconds arbor and the hole in the dial!

Lacking hour and minute hands and both balance and escape arbor top pivots broken. Somewhat dirty and not working.
