M & T DUTTON, London. No 1516

Fine large half-quarter repeating watch from this justly famous firm started by Thomas Mudge.

Item 99370 Categories: Watches, Pocket Watches

£3,495.00

Beautiful pierced and engraved 22 ct inner case hallmarked 1795, now with fine replacement gilt-metal engine-turned outer case that probably dates from around 1830. Capped fullplate fusee movement of this firm’s usual finest quality, unusually with a going-fusee, the repeat work of the usual best Stogden design and with an unusual form of sliding ‘pulse-piece’ mechanism for making the strike ‘dumb.’ Cylinder (deadbeat) escapement with the original 13-tooth brass escape. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. Beautiful original dial in perfect condition, enamelled on gold, with the original ‘7-point’ beetle & poker hands. 52 mm diameter.

Matthew and Thomas Dutton, 148 Fleet St, London, sons of William Dutton, continuing the business originally set up by Thomas Mudge. They were in partnership after their father’s death in 1794 for around five years, at which point Thomas left, possibly when Matthew, the eldest son, became Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1800. See also my short essay on Mudge & Dutton and the later Dutton firms in the 2019 Toby Birch illustrated catalogue, copies of which are for sale on my website.

NB: The Vulliamy ‘Assistants Watch Book’ records the firm having serviced this watch for a “Miss Holt” in December 1845.

The cap bolt repaired and noting the later but good outer which is reflected in the price. Otherwise in fine original condition, with a beautiful dial, and one of very few repeating watches known by the two Dutton sons – George Daniels owned No 1571. Serviced and guaranteed.
