John GASKIN, Dublin. No 2009
Fine Liverpool supplied cylinder movement, circa 1815.
£95.00
Nicely finished fullplate movement with going fusee and cap jewels on balance (diamond) and escape, the 4th wheel also jewelled, the cap stamped H. Cylinder (dead-beat) escapement with beautifully polished steel escape. Steel balance, spiral balance spring. One-piece enamel dial. 46.5 mm, 13.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
The Gaskin firm in Dublin had four generations called John, this almost certainly the work of the 3rd.
Lacking hands, dial with cracks and edge chip and the fusee chain complete but detached from the barrel. With such a well finished movement the escapement almost certainly started life with a jewelled cylinder – the present cylinder is steel. Not cleaned by me but will tick when pressure is applied to the train.
