Jas McCABE, Royal Exchange, London. No 9921
Good large Duplex movement by this interesting firm, circa 1825.
£245.00
Fullplate fusee movement with cap jewels on balance (diamond) and escape, the cock table showing through cap and the pillar-plate with the firms small ‘IMC’ stamp next to its serial number 9921. Duplex escapement retaining the ruby roller, so often missing or replaced with steel. Gold balance with poising screws, spiral balance-spring. Signed enamel dial, gilt hand. 47 mm diameter, 14 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
James McCabe, one of the leading watchmakers of the period. See the article on the firm by Paul Hackamack published in Antiquarian Horology, Vol 10, 1977, and my recent Profile No 4 on Tyrer’s Duplex escapement.
Edge chips and a hair crack in the dial, otherwise complete apart from the hands. Rather dirty, and not cleaned by me, but will tick happily when wound.
