J & G MACKIE, City Rd, London. No 4225, for M B LEGGE

Unusual capped & jewelled late Georgian verge watch, with provenance.

Item 5548 Categories: Pocket Watches, Watches

£695.00

Single silver case hallmarked London 1823, casemaker ID (James Dow, Clerkenwell). Capped fullplate fusee movement with diamond endstone and continental-style adjustment for drops mounted on the potence, the edge of the cock foot probably engraved with the name of the first owner, M B LEGGE. Verge (recoil) escapement. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. One-piece cream enamel dial, blued-steel hands. 54 mm diameter.

Jasper and George Mackie, 31 City Road, London, watch, clock and chronometer makers.

NB: Rarely does one encounter the type of drop adjustment as found in this watch and the  date of this watch, the early 1820’s, coincides with a renewed interest in the deadbeat (frictional rest) verge as used in some mail coach watches by Wregg and others. Thus it is possible that the present recoiling verge staff may be a replacement for an original deadbeat example. See the article by D A K Redman in Antiquarian Horology for a similar dated watch (1819) with a deadbeat verge by Bentley & Beck.

Dial with hair cracks, otherwise just slight general signs of use throughout, noting the present recoiling staff. An unusual watch certainly worthy of further research and possible restoration. Cleaned for its previous owner and working well.
