HODGES, Dublin
An exceptional and previously unrecorded London supplied pocket chronometer, in wonderful original condition.
£16,500.00
Large silver case with pink gold bezels hallmarked London 1810, casemakers FC/FHB (Frederick Comptesse and Frederick Humbert), with a gilt engraved dome in the manner of Richard Pendleton, beautifully engraved for its Dublin retailer. Fullplate fusee movement with Arnold’s form of spring-detent escapement, acting in compression, the detent housed within a slot in the top plate. Arnold-type ‘Z’ compensation balance, spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial in perfect condition, original pink gold hands. 68 mm diameter. Together with a lovely early 3-piece mahogany deck box of what I believe to be a unique construction, having an additional locking latch for the top lid on the underside of the middle section, the inside of the lid bearing the watchpaper (incomplete) of Robert Pennington. Box 12 x 9 x 6 cm.
Frederick Hodges, Capel St, Dublin, one time partner (c.1804-1809) with John Crosthwaite, one of the most interesting Dublin based watchmakers of his day. Both are known to have strong connections with the best English work, and I do wonder if this impressive but unnumbered watch may have been ordered for Hodges himself – what better way to show off his credentials to prospective clients.
Richard Pendleton, White Lion St, Pentonville, London, watchmaker (primarily an escapement maker), known for his participation in the Mudge-copy chronometer business set up by Thomas Mudge’s son. Pendleton also made the main series of lever escapement watches sold by Josiah Emery, and which he continued to produce after Emery’s death.
Robert Pennington, Camberwell, London, watch and chronometer maker, also known for his participation in the Mudge-copy chronometer business, and almost certainly afterwards with a close working relationship with Pendleton.
In fine original condition showing few of the usual signs of use. Serviced and guaranteed.
