GRAYAM & CO, London. No 3633
Rare ‘PATENT’ Massey lever movement with ‘EMP’ stamp, circa 1818, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£95.00
Coventry supplied fullplate fusee movement, the cock with unusual ‘lion’ mask and the underside of the foot bearing the early Massey’s Patent stamp and number: E M P 2405, almost certainly standing for Edward Massey’s Patent together with Massey’s production number. Massey detached lever escapement with 30-tooth escape wheel and type-1 steel roller. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. Damaged enamel dial of early half-hunter form. 47 mm diameter, 14 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Grayam & Co, London, retailers, with an example of their output once in the Ilbert collection, as recorded by Baillie.
Edward J Massey, Newcastle, Coventry and Liverpool, escapement manufacturer and Patentee of the first extensively used detached lever escapements. First identified and catalogued by Alan Treherne, the various types being designated from 1 to 5. Types-I and -5 are the earliest and least common, followed by type-2 and then type-3. Type-4 is a seconds beating-variant, usually fitted with a type-3 roller, and is very rare.
NB: Early Massey lever examples bearing the ‘EMP’ or ‘EIMP’ stamps, as first recognised by Alan Treherne, are rare, this being part of his extensive collection of Liverpool material put together over the last forty years. Please also note that in selling these few EMP movements they are likely to seem relatively common. They are not. Once sold I doubt I will be able to offer many, if any more in the coming years.
Damaged dial, broken staff and all rather dusty. Otherwise complete (it was never capped), a rare example of an early Coventry Massey, almost certainly from the important Vale & Rotherham company.
