F J MASSEY ‘PATENTEE’ No 264
Rare pump-wind movement signed by the patentee, circa 1841, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£175.00
Slim full-plate going-barrel movement, the 8-size hollow-back frame stamped F M P 264. Massey detached lever escapement with type-3 jewelled roller. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. 35 mm diameter.
Francis Joseph Massey, Patent No 8947, May 1841 “for winding up watches by means of the pendant.” Francis Joseph (18901-1845), nephew of Edward Massey (1768-1852).
This movement is item 68 in the 1977 catalogue of the exhibition held at the Borough Museum, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Organised by Alan and entitled THE MASSEY FAMILY…, it is still the best information in print about this most important family of inventors, makers and business men. My plan, with Alan’s help, is to produce an updated Profile on Edward Massey’s watches in the near future.
Lacking dial, hands and motion work. Otherwise complete and rather dusty, but tries to tick if wound. Sold as needing at least a service and fresh oil to work as intended. Rare.
