Interesting ‘DETACH’D’ movement with Massey 1 escapement, circa 1820, from the Alan Treherne collection.

Fullplate fusee movement, never capped, the name-bar engraved to show it being supplied by the firm of Litherland Davies & Co. Massey type-1 detached lever escapement, the earliest of the four different Massey rollers. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. 41 mm diameter.

Peter Litherland, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. known for his invention of the rack-lever escapement but also one of the first watch manufacturers to fit the new detached lever escapements designed and patented by Edward J Massey. NB. The Treherne collection will feature strongly in a planned Profile I shall be publishing on the watches of Edward Massey.

Edward Massey, Newcastle, Coventry and Liverpool, escapement manufacturer and Patentee of the first extensively used detached lever escapements. First identified and catalogued by Alan Treherne, the various types being designated from 1 to 5. Types I and 5 are the earliest and least common, followed by type-2 and then type-3. Type-4 is a seconds beating-variant, usually fitted with a type-3 roller, and is very rare.

Lacking dial, hands and fusee chain, otherwise in good original but dusty condition. Not cleaned by me and although nothing appears broken sold as not working.
