Colin C SAWERS, London. No 5849
Rare transitional fullplate Lancashire movement with Massey escapement, circa 1830, from the Alan Treherne collection.
£95.00
Slim fullplate fusee movement, the balance let into the top plate, with sprung cap. Massey detached lever escapement with type-2 jewelled roller. Steel balance, spiral balance-spring. One-piece cream enamel dial, blued-steel hands. 45 mm diameter and only 10 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Colin Sawers, recorded in Loomes, but possibly an owner?
Edward Massey, Newcastle, Coventry and Liverpool, escapement manufacturer and Patentee of the first extensively used detached lever escapements. First identified and catalogued by Alan Treherne, the various types have come to be called from 1 to 5. Types I and 5 are the earliest and least common, followed by type 2 and then type 3. Type 4 is a seconds beating-variant, usually fitted with a type 3 roller, and is very rare.
One of my favourite Liverpool callipers of the period. Cracked dial and lacking seconds hands, otherwise complete. Not cleaned by me but will tick if wound.
