Fine large duplex movement with gold dial, circa 1810.
20-size fullplate fusee movement jewelled on the balance (diamond), and escape. Duplex (frictional rest) escapement retaining the original ruby roller. Flat steel balance, original 4-turn blued-steel spiral balance-spring. Solid gold dial (tests as at least 18ct), with engine-turned centre and raised gold hour numerals, weighing 8 grams. 49 mm diameter, 13.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
Henry Berthoud (recorded as Berthoad in Baillie), a London "watch maker" known to have been working in Thornley St, Bloomsbury.
In good original condition, looking to have just lost its case to the scrappers, but with one impulse tooth missing from the escape wheel - with care these can be replaced. Despite this, and although not cleaned by me, it runs happily when wound. Worth more than the price for the lovely dial (scrapping at around £290) and original intact ruby roller alone.
