Used to rivet a verge staff to the balance, 18/19th century.
Small brass stake held in the jaws of a vice, with hardened steel table pierced to allow the staff to sit properly when riveting, an otherwise daunting task. 13 mm tall, 10 mm wide.
The Stubs Tool Catalogue, page 13, shows a rather poor engraving of one, which is described as a 'verge stock.' A difficult tool to find, an example even eluding Ted Crom for many yers, about which I remember him being teased - as usual, he deserved it.
Good unpolished 'off the bench' condition.
